The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) REQUIRES
- For ages 15-17 yrs. must take Driver Education. Total hours REQUIRED are 46 which are listed below. A transfer is allowed, mention this in the registration form.
- If age 18-24, they can still take Driver's Ed or they can take an online Adult 6 hour Laws & Signs class which will issue a certificate to take the DPS for the Learners Permit License. (

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) REQUIREMENTS

  • REQUIRED - 16 Classroom Lessons on Traffic Law and Driving Theory at 2 hours per lesson for a total of 32 hours. Age 14 may take the class, but must be 15 before obtaining a Texas Learner's Permit License.

  • REQUIRED - 7 Car Training Lessons (Behind-the-Wheel and Observation) 2 hours per lesson (1 hour driving and 1 hour observing another student driver) 7 Driving and 7 Observing - Total 14 hours. The training car has the Instructor brake pedal, Instructor rear-view mirror and high-risk auto insurance which are required by the TX Dept. of Licensing & Regulation. 

  • REQUIRED - Parent 30 hours practice at home. (And they need lots more!).

  • The above Three Requirements will have three separate dates listed on the completion certificate so that the DPS knows the course and practice have been completed.

  • To obtain a Texas License: For ages 16-17, the above 3 requirements must be completed, and must surpass the 180 day Practice Period (see back of permit Restriction F, then test after this date if age 16-Click Here for more info.) For ages 18 and above, must have obtained the Learners Permit License and practiced sufficiently to pass the DPS Road Exam of parallel parking, turning, back up slowly 20 yards straight and changing lanes.

Lago Vista CAR Training ONLY (Classroom sessions are not held in Lago Vista.) Car Training Students who live in Lago Vista, will meet at Lago Vista High School Parent-pickup when school is in session and then drop off after the lesson will be at 20511 Dawn Drive. Fri. or Sat. Lessons will begin and end at 20511 Dawn Drive.

Teen Driver Education has numerous changes from 30 years ago. The Graduated Licensing Program began in 2001 to help reduce Teen Driver fatalities by establishing three steps of supervised responsibility.

ADULT DRIVER RESOURCES (age 18-24)

STATE REQUIRED - 6 Classroom hours on Traffic Law and Signs-Signals
- Take the Class Certificate and Required Proofs of ID, to the Texas DPS office to obtain a
Texas Learner's Permit
- After getting lessons and practice, recommend at least 6 lessons and 30 hours practice,
return to the DPS for a Road Skills Test. (see links below to schedule.)

Click on a school below if you do not have your Texas Learner's Permit yet and need to take the 6-hour Course or if you have your permit, but it was from Driver’s Ed for ages 15-17, you will need to complete/finish the Teen Program by taking 7 lessons for a certificate or retake this below online course of Laws and Signs for the 6-Hour mandated class for Adults (18-24) in order to obtain a driver’s license.
