Miss Stone
Miss Stone is a native Houstonian and has been a Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR) Certified Instructor since 2003. She relocated to Lago Vista, TX and loves the small town atmosphere and scenic views. She has a BBA in Business Administration and a Minor In Secondary Education from Midwestern State University Texas, Wichita Falls, TX. She is a State Certified Business Teacher and Coach with a lifetime license and is also State Certified for K-8th. She played on scholarship intercollegiate Basketball 2 seasons at MSU (Co-Captain) and 2 seasons at North Central Texas College in Gainesville, TX and intercollegiate Volleyball (Co-Captain) and Softball each for one season at MSU.
In the past 7 years of her career history of 22 years of training students, she has seen and experienced a huge increase of students that suffer from learning impairments and are also lacking confidence (more fearful and less trusting of their capability of learning car control skills) in mastering the skills needed for safe driving. Her registration data is showing 37%-42% are listing some type of Learning Impairment. So unfortunately in the past, there have been negative training situations that added more stress to the student and herself, which prompted the need for SPED training. One of her college professors stated, ‘The biggest room in the world, is the room for improvement.’
So in June 2024, in order to adjust training methods to better support students with Learning Impairments so that they may achieve greater success in obtaining driving skills, she began a course study for Special Ed (SPED) Driver’s ED. Texas has shown the biggest increase in serving students with Learning Impairments (Autism, ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia-not just a reading problem, Information Processing, GAD General Anxiety Disorder), all of which produce a huge obstacle for learning how to control a car along with reducing confidence to learn something new.
Since her formal training in college was for teaching high school students in Accounting I & II, Business Math and Coaching Basketball and Volleyball, it was not for SPED. With the Consulting and Coaching she has sought this past year, she has made adjustments in her training methods in order to better assist the Learning Impaired student. She has quickly adapted multiple lesson plans and training sessions as well as slightly lowering her expectations for these students which has made a huge affect in this arena of learning. This new understanding and these new methods have given her a much greater compassion and understanding of the student who suffers from learning impairments. In addition, some parents are shy about listing an impairment as they register or the student has not had a diagnosis and may not know that they have a learning impairment until later in their teens or early adult years, so as the training sessions reveal a learning deficit, she adjusts accordingly for greater success.
Also, she is also highly attuned to the fact that the majority of students have been using their cell phone while being chauffeured to their activities throughout Elementary and Middle School. Therefore, they are not watching the parent drive nor the roadways-traffic and Signs/Signals/Pavement Markings. So to combat this deficit, she requires the student to mark an Observation Worksheet (tick marks for sign awareness) while they are in the back seat observing the other student for one hour, and then they drive for one hour on these State Required 2-Hour Sessions. This observation exercise strengthens their awareness skills to focus on the law instead of being so fearful of other motorists.
In 2003, under TEA Driver’s Ed Instructor Training, she became certified for a DET (Driver’s Ed Teacher). In 2004, she became certified at Texas A&M University, to teach the Drug & Alcohol Driving Awareness Program. In 2011, she became TDLR Certified to teach Defensive Driving Safety also known as 'Ticket Dismissal Class'. In 2013, she obtained the TDLR Supervisor Trainer endorsement and has trained others to become a Driver's Ed Teacher. Two of her students have opened their own school. In 2011, she was trained in Motorcycle Safety and holds a Class M Motorcycle License. TDLR and TEA require all instructors to be fingerprinted and pass all background checks and she has complied with both entities. She has taught for Gulf Coast, SafeWay and Stay Safe Driving Schools in the Greater Houston Area, and Longhorn and Lake Travis Driving in the Greater Austin area before starting her school 2018.
Her career before teaching was in the business field with employers Exxon USA-Training Division, Continental Airlines-Accounting Division, GE Capital Mortgage Servicing-Default Management Division, Barrett Burke Law Firm Mortgage Foreclosure and Bankruptcy-Bankruptcy Case Manager, Gray CPA & Associates PC-Tax Preparer, L. William Perrin CPA & Associates, PC.- Accounting, Bookkeeping and Tax Preparer. She had a part-time wedding videography company and recorded and edited numerous weddings. She was a teacher and coach in Houston, TX and led the Volleyball Team to 1st in State in their division her 2nd year and 4th in State her first year.
She loves the outdoors, camping, hiking, softball, volleyball, soccer, photography and more recently the challenging game of golf and Wii tennis, when the weather is bad! She has a sister who is a Pediatrician in Evansville, IN (with whom she routinely consults with for Adolescent Health/Mental Health Issues) and a brother who is the AEG Wardrobe Productions Manager for Garth Brooks, Rod Stewart, Adele, Usher, Seinfeld, Reba-Brooks & Dunn, etc. and formerly Celine Dion, Elton John at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace Las Vegas, NV. She lost her older sister to Cancer in 2014, so understands the issues of loss and grief, which is why she is very concerned that teens learn how to drive safely to avoid injurious and fatal collisions to avoid a painful and interruptive event in their life’s journey. Unfortunately, Parent Taught Behind-the-Wheel Car Training holds the highest rate of teen fatalities.
